I am standing in the doorway of a candlelit dive bar in Antigua, Guatemala holding an illegal mezcal cocktail listening to a post-punk mariachi two piece band pour out their soul and leave it right there on the floor. Suddenly I hear pa-pop pop and turn to see the sky fill with fireworks.
What is my life?
After more than a year away from Latin America, what a glorious welcome back Antigua gave us our first night in town.
Almost immediately after checking into our BnB, we made a friend from Montreal and shared beers (O’Canada). We found a little restaurant off the town square and even met the owner, who is a chef, restauranteur, painter, author, and who knows what else. Then we stumbled into the best bar in Antigua, if not the world, for an incredible night of mezcal and music as friends embraced around us and fireworks lit the night sky.
Other people will call me a rebel, but I just feel like I’m living my life and doing what I want to do. Sometimes people call that rebellion, especially when you’re a woman. – Joan Jett
